Prawn industry floats fish farm concerns over future
New Zealanders can’t be blamed for believing that New Zealand is the natural place for seafood and is already taking steps to reduce the impact of climate change.
A study published on Wednesday by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) found that in the year to December 2015, more than one third of New Zealanders (38%) were concerned about the impact of climate change on marine living conditions. But those concerns went further, with 30% also concerned about the future availability of fish.
By contrast, in 2015 just 7% thought that New Zealan우리카지노d’s fish farms would be of any good or that the industry’s production rates were suitable for the future, the FAO found.
There was no national or regional survey of New Zealanders’ views on fish production. New Zealand had three separate fisheries authorities, with fishers from around the country represented.
Fisheries Minister Stuart Rose said he hoped people would take action to reduce the impa바카라cts of climate change, but “I certainly expect we can reduce fish farm impacts”.
“The government has worked hard to develop legislation on improving public confidence on the need for sustainable seafood production in New Zealand,” he said.
However, he believed most New Zealanders were still concerned that 카지노 사이트global warming and other environmental issues were affecting fish farms.
A fish farming industry based around two major production lines is currently thriving in New Zealand and accounts for 10% of the country’s seafood supply. New Zealand’s five other major fishing nations – Australia, China, India, Japan and South Africa – have a combined one in two of their seafoods in the three largest fish growing areas.
However, while fish farms are used to sustain many different communities, they are now also used in large amounts to produce a range of processed food products such as bread and beer and processed meats.
The government plans to create the largest catch management system, which would allow fishers to directly manage and reduce the amount of fish they caught, and has also announced it would invest over $5m in an “urgent” effort to help tackle the impact of climate change on aquaculture in New Zealand.
“We need to be looking at how we manage our aquaculture to ensure that when people have money to spend they don’t spend it on something that doesn’t help them and isn’t sustainable,” Rose said.
